The annual City Vs Country representative match was played at St Marys Stadium on Wednesday night 21 July and for the first time since the inception of the event in 2008, Country came away winners 16 to 14 over their City rivals.

Like the previous matches in 2008 & 09, the final result was in the balance until the end and a good crowd braved the icy cold conditions to be rewarded with a thrilling match highlighting the best talent playing in the NSW Tertiary Student competions - 10 of the 11 clubs in the comps were represented on the night.

Country started the match in top gear and drew first blood when half back Chris Clavell crossed after only 10 minutes. A Blake Robinson conversion gave Country a 6-0 lead and they held it until late in the half when a series of Country handling errors and back to back penalties against them allowed City field position for five eight Joseph Wright to score an easy 4-pointer. Oliver Saunders converted for both teams to go to the break 6 all.

From the opening of the second stanza City continued their late first half form posting a try to David Faunoku after only 4 minutes and soon after winger Joel Hirst crossed and the boys from the Big Smoke held a handy 14-6 lead.

But Country bounced back with a try to center Junior Amosa mid-way through the half and with 12 minutes left a try to five eight John Norford provided his side with what proved to be the match decider.

Plenty of outstanding performances in a very evenly contested affair, but the "Rugby League Review Magazine" Man of the Match award went to Country back rower Phil Thurgood.
